So besides riding to and from work 45km – 60km a day 4-5 days a week I’ve lined up several local cycling events for 2016.
May 1st: CN Cycle for CHEO: Help Kids with Cancer 70km
The 70km route is the longest available but there are shorter and family friendly distances and besides raising money for a good cause, the (other) best thing about this event is that it is on closed roads using the various parkways in the city.
June 11th – 12th: Rideau Lakes Bike Tour 102km (204km total)
This year will be the 45th edition of the tour for folks to cycle from Ottawa (for the full 174km x 2) or for the 102km x 2 from Perth to Kingston and back the next day.
I hadn’t done this event in several years (after doing the full route, and then the shorter route), but signed back up last year after spending a year off due to recovering from back and hip issues.
I was expecting the same old route, but last years edition for the 100km length used a new route that took very quiet 2 lane highway roads there and back (the cyclists outnumber the cars).
July 23rd – Ottawa Granfondo 180km
This will be this events 4th year, it’s 3rd year beginning assisted by the Ottawa Lung Association (who provide logistical support and route support) for whom this ride raises funds, and my 3rd year. I first did it with my sister 2 years ago when she got her first road bike, and we road the 65km in honour of our mother who passed away from a lung disease.
Best improvement last year was the addition of colour coded arrows on the road that helped make navigation a breeze.
Last year I upped to the 100km route and this year I’ve upped it again to the 180km, and who knows maybe next year I will attempt the 225km route.
Champlains Folly – July date not set 130km
I rode this last year, which was it’s second year in existence to help raise funds fort the Ottawa Velodrome Project, but so far their website does not show a date for this year.
August 27th – Kawartha Lakes Classic Cycling Tour 100km
